Paulo Alvares
The Brazilia pianist Paulo Sergio Guimaraes Alvares was born in Bello Horzonte. He studied piano at the University of Sao Paulo with Caio Pagano, also studying chamber music and new music. In 1985 he went to Texas to study with Steven de Groote and earned his masters degree there in 1987. A DAAD stipend for the years 1988 to 1990 allowed him to study in Cologne with Aloys Kontarsky. Paulo Alvares received the Kranichsteiner Music Prize in July 1990 at the Darmstadt International Course for New Music. Subsequently he worked at IRCAM in Paris, studying the relationship between the piano and live electronics.
Paulo Alvares has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the world, playing new music, improvised music as well as classical and 20th century repertoire. Among his numerous recordings we note here the release in December 2002 of the complete keyboard music of Mauricio Kagel (on the CPO label).
In recent times he has been working on a regular basis as a pianist with the WDR Radio Orchestra, Ensemble Noamnesia in Chicago, Het Spectral Ensemble in Ghent, Musikfabrik in Dueseldorf and others. He has performed as a featured soloist in many festivals of new music, including Wien Modern, Trienale Koeln, Huddersfield, Musica in Strasbourg, Berio Festival in Turin, Witten days for new music, Festival Musicia Nova in Sao Paulo and many others. His close working relationship with important composers and conductors includes Helmut Lachenmann, Maurico Kagel, Luciano Berio, Tristan Murail, Gerhard Staebler, Jonathan Harvey, Dieter Schnabel, Hans Zender, Jonathan Nott, Lev Markiz, Zoltan Nagy, Peter Etvos, Gunter Schuller and many others.
