What is the Sound of China?

This concert will feature the new music group “Ensemble Noamnesia” with special guests Chao-Ming Tung (a composer and guzheng player from Taiwan), Wu Wei (a sheng player from China), and Hong Wang (a huqin player and the director of Melody of China in San Francisco).

The program will feature new compositions for Chinese and western instruments by Chao-Ming Tung, Gene Coleman, and Yuji Takahashi, experimental improvised music and traditional Chinese music. The concert will feature the guzheng, a large zither-like instrument from China (similar to a Koto), the sheng, a bamboo mouth organ from China, and the huqin, a two string violin from China. Each of these instruments have been used for thousands of years in Chinese music; this program will explore the ways in which these instruments have traditionally been used, and the fascinating new possibilities for contemporary music as expressed by these extraordinary artists.

The new music group “dal niente”, performs Morton Feldman's “Piano and String Quartet” (1985)

Morton Feldman is considered one of the most important American composers of the 20th century and his impact on both the experimental and avant-garde traditions is lasting.  Feldman completed "Piano and String Quartet" two years before his death in 1985 and it has, along with the string quartet no. 2, gained a special status among his late works. "Piano and String Quartet" was made known to larger audiences with a critically-acclaimed recording by Aki Takahashi and the Kronos Quartet in 1993.

While the work is substantially shorter than the String Quartet no. 2, with a duration of about an hour and half, dal niente will offer a unique opportunity for listeners to enter the magically ominous sonic world of Feldman's last years.

dal niente is a Chicago-based contemporary music collective that has promoted  contemporary concert music by established and emerging composers through public performance, recording and collaborative projects since 2004.

*October 31 at 8:00 PM: Philadelphia Music and Film Event:

Music and Film event with the Japanese silent film “A Page of Madness” (1926) featuring live music composed by Gene Coleman played by Ensemble N_JP (Japan/USA), conducted by Thaddeus Squire. The Sound Field 2006 festival will conclude in Philadelphia with this special Halloween treat! “A Page of Madness” is a truly amazing film and an incredible document attesting to the creativity of it's director, Teinosuke Kinugasa.

Amplifying and contrasting the images and moods of the film, Gene Coleman has created a surreal and fantastic score that immerses the audience in this unique cinematic experience. The constantly morphing, ethereal sounds of Japanese traditional instruments, along with a western instrument ensemble and electronic sounds make this a perfect compliment to Kinugasa's film.
